Hermits are a type of cookie. The recipe can be found in many 19th century cookbooks and are still popular today. They were called Hermits because they kept well.

One cup butter, two cups sugar, two eggs, one teaspoon soda, one and one-half teaspoons each cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg; one cup sweet milk, one cup chopped raisins, half cup currants; mix as for any cookies, but not too stiff; put in a cool place for several hours until cold. Roll thin and bake.
